87th Unionville Community Fair (September 30th – October 2nd, 2011) Fairgrounds behind Landhope Farms at the intersection of Routes 82 & 926 in Kennett Square, PA. The Fair showcases the largest display of community and agricultural products in Chester County. Kuerner Farm Tours For more than 70 years, the historic Kuerner Farm was a major source of inspiration to Andrew Wyeth. Since his earliest painting of the farm in 1932 at the age of 15, Wyeth found subjects in its people, animals, buildings and landscapes for nearly 1,000 works of art. Due to uneven walking surfaces, the Kuerner Farm is not accessible to disabled individuals. Tours depart from the museum at timed intervals, Thursday through Sunday. Admission: $5 per person in addition to museum admission.

N.C. Wyeth House and Studio Tours The house where N.C. Wyeth raised his extraordinarily creative children and the studio in which he painted many of his memorable works of art have been restored. N. C. Wyeth’s Treasure Island, Classic Illustrations for a Classic Tale 2011 is the 100th anniversary of the publication of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island with illustrations by N.C. Wyeth. The famous edition was a critical and popular success, established Wyeth among the period’s foremost illustrators, and became the iconic Treasure Island for generations of readers. To mark the anniversary, all 16 dramatic paintings created by Wyeth will be on display together for the first time since they left the artist’s studio a century ago. Through November 17

Honoring Howard Pyle: Major Works from the Collections The imaginative and fluent work of Howard Pyle (1853-1911) has thrilled readers and inspired generations of artists. This exhibition, drawn from the museum’s collection, will present a selection of vivid paintings and decorative drawings featuring pirates, Arthurian legends, fairy tales, events in American history and allegorical figures that made Pyle the most famous illustrator of his generation. Inspiring Minds: Howard Pyle as Teacher As a teacher of illustration from 1894 to 1905, Howard Pyle inspired the careers of both young and seasoned illustrators. This exhibition examines Pyle’s teaching methods that honed the skills of Jessie Willcox Smith, Thornton Oakley, Frank Schoonover, N.C Wyeth and many others. It includes examples of students’ class assignments as well as of their mature work. Period photographs that document activities of Pyle’s classes are also presented. Through January 29, 2012

Masterpieces by Andrew Wyeth from the Collections The museum’s superlative collection of works by Andrew Wyeth demonstrates a range of styles and subject matter representing the artist’s 75-year career. These works record the artist’s view of the landscape and his experiences with people and places. In addition, a selection of studies for these paintings is lent from the Andrew and Betsy Wyeth Collection. These seldom-seen works in pencil and watercolor demonstrate the artist’s close observation of form and his exploration of color and mood. Through November 20

Furniture of Soutern Pennsylvania 1725-1850
This exhibition explores the furniture of southeastern Pennsylvania and the people who made, owned, inherited, and collected it. Delving into the cultures and creativity of the area’s inhabitants, primarily those of British and Germanic heritage, this comprehensive show features nearly 200 objects, including unique and colorful furniture, fraktur, needlework, paintings, and other items related to the history of the region.
Paint, Pattern & People sheds new light on distinctive local variations of furniture, presenting rare examples for which the maker or family history is known. The exhibition will be accompanied by a complementary video and special house tours as well as a fully illustrated, 304-page publication and a major symposium on the furniture of southeastern Pennsylvania. Join us for an in-depth exploration of this diverse region and its various creative expressions.

See how Steinway crafts its world-renowned pianos and learn the story of Longwood’s 1923 custom Steinway grand piano. This dynamic exhibit takes place in the Music Room inside the Conservatory and honors the International Year of the Forest as declared by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests around the globe.

Escape to Adventure: Focus on Arthur E. Becher
German émigré artist Arthur Ernst Becher (1877-1960) studied in Milwaukee and Munich before joining Howard Pyle’s school of illustration in 1902. He went on to a long career, publishing illustrations for diversionary fiction that gave readers a generation of armchair adventures – ranging from thrilling historical exploits to contemporary crises of family and workplace. This exhibition also includes a number of works in the same vein by other illustrators. Escape to Adventure replaces the On Assignment: American Illustration exhibition in the Brock Vinton Galleries, which ends February 20, 2011.
