The Defense of the Fort
From this view of Fort Mifflin’s walls facing south and east with the tanker in the Delaware River, it’s not hard to imagine the American defenders in the fort having a similar view of British war ships approaching the port of Philadelphia. The low profile harbor fort on Mud Island in the Delaware was the only thing that stood between the British war ships and the port of Philadelphia. The British ships were intending to deliver reinforcements to forces under the command of General William Howe who had taken the city on September 26th. Fort Mifflin was manned by the Pennsylvania navy and artillerists, who were hopelessly out manned and out gunned by the British.
