The Defense of the Fort
The British artillery barrage on the fort began on November 10th, guns firing from British ships in the Delaware and artillery to the west. This view of the fort, from across the moat shows the height of the walls and the Fort Mifflin flag flying at the northeast bastion near the main gate of the fort. At the time of the attack on the fort, the moat was only a narrow wet ditch. The barrage reduced the fort to near rubble, the bombardment being expertly directed by Captain John Montrésor of the Royal Engineers who had designed and built the fort for the governor of Pennsylvania in 1771. He knew exactly how to render the fort defenseless.
